LOOKING AHEAD TO 2009

I'm sitting here in class and I cannot believe for a second that the summer is over. This should be a very interesting year. If everyone continues with the program we have a very large group of talented returners. Recruiting will play a big part this year with a very large senior class. We should have at least 38 seniors returning this year to finish their year with Fife Track & Field. We could see a huge senior night if all those kids come out. Our strengths this season for both teams are in the sprints and in the throws. Jumpers are talented, but we need to improve on our numbers in those areas. Distance runners are definitely needed to help compliment some incredible athletes and the same can be said for jumpers.  The boys should be extremely competitive this year with the acquisition of a talented sprinting group returning for their second season together on the track.  I’m excited to see Trevor move to the 400 meters and look forward to watching “the Jordans” continue to improve.  I really believe that with the right new additions at our weak areas the boys team could end the slump and bring back the League Championship.  The girls look like the team to beat again this year in our League, District, and hopefully are one of the top teams at the state competition in May.  Our girls return the 2nd place finishers in both the 400 meters and High Jump.  We are also returning all three of our state relay teams intact for the most part.  We will have to change up and replace one of our legs in the long relay, but we have a few talented sprinters who I am sure can step in there and really impress.  However, with all the optimism comes a little worry.  We are really old!  My biggest worry moving into this season is that we are really looking at the need to get out there and recruit.  We need some new talent to come in and help out the program before our senior girls move on to bigger things.  We only had a total of 6 sophomore girls turn out for track last season.  They were all tremendous acquisitions but we needed more in order to ensure that the program continues to remain dominant in our league.  Hopefully our kids will hit the streets and find some young kids to help move us ahead in the right direction.  A few new pieces and we might just surprise some people.
